As the afternoon looked to be heading for a draw with the Reds having a clear chance to win the game with an Iain Hume penalty, but Jon Macken's last gasp strike at the end of the game gave Barnsley all three points.
There was a feeling of optimism with the first game under the watchful eye of Mark Robins, even if the reality was that he would have a lot to do to rectify the issues that have been laid before him.
It was a hugely disappointing afternoon. Barnsley started the game well and were the only team in it, but after Reading equalised they were much the better for the rest of the game.
