Barnsley blow down Ipswich A sunny, but blustery day greeted Barnsley and Ipswich Town for game 11 of the season. Andy Gray was out because of illness and Anderson De Silva not in the team because of injury. Jamal Campbell-Ryce was the only change in the side that comprehensively beat West Bromwich Albion in midweek. Stephen Foster was making his 100th appearance for Barnsley and Darren Moore making his 600th career match.
As the afternoon looked to be heading for a draw with the Reds having a clear chance to win the game with an Iain Hume penalty, but Jon Macken's last gasp strike at the end of the game gave Barnsley all three points.
Early pressure in the opening minutes had Ipswich conceding a corner as Shotton was teeing up for a shot. Hume put in a testing cross, but the referee blew for pushing just as Hammill put in a deflected shot.
Shottons long ball chased down by Iain Hume got his cross in and confusing in Ipswich's defence led to Barnsley's second corner.
Peters benefited from the wind when his cross was blown toward goal and landed on the top of the net.
Iain Hume showed the monkey was well and truly off his back when Macken held the ball up, laid it on for Hume who shot from 18 yards, beating Wright as the ball nestled into the bottom corner after less than nine minutes.
That was the queue for the Barnsley fans to raise the level of noise around Oakwell.
Jamie Peters tried another attempt on goal from distance when no one closed him down, but fortunately the ball sailed high and wide of goals.
Over the last few games it has been very noticeable that Barnsley's passing and tempo have improved immensely making them a different proposition under Mark Robins.
Shotton had a nose for the goal line with 17 minutes gone by and his shot was covered by Wright. Ipswich were quick down the line with Darren Moore getting the vital interception to give away a corner.
Bialkowski let the ball bounce to him as Tommy Smith ran onto it and he was extremely luckly not to give away a cheap goal. Mark Robins on the bench looked no to happy.
Campbell-Ry e broke down the flank, passed through to Hume and he could not get a good shot in, but did get a corner. Hume took the corner and Foster rose highest to head it onto the crossbar and over.
In the three weeks that Robins has been at the club he has managed to bring in a group of players that have made the difference. The big question is will Shotton, Dickinson and Doyle be able to prolong their stay beyond January?
With 13 minutes remaining in the half Campbell-Ryce put in a good ball to Hume who worked some space to shoot with Wright diving to save. He certainly looked the player with the most energy on the pitch.
It was almost level when Ipswich put a ball in, it went across the box and Foster bizarrely dummied the ball allow Alan Quinn to shoot and Foster redeemed himself with a block.
Another Ipswich break by Walters put them in a great position and he crossed for Priskin to head. It was a soft header, but even so, Bialkowski managed to spill it before gathering a firm hold.
On minute 40 Jon Macken had an excellent chance to score, but hit it too hard and high letting the Tractor Boys off the hook.
Down the other end Priskin challenging for the ball went right into Bialkowski and he looked in real pain. Priskin also came off worse for wear and got a yellow card for his troubles. Barnsley's keeper thankfully continued with an injured Luke Steele on the bench for cover. Darren Moore's outrage also earned him a place in the referees book.
Ipswich managed to equalise when they earned a free kick from 30 yards out. Leadbitter's strike was fumbled by Bialkowski stright into Liam Resenior's path and he stuck it in the net. Barnsley's keeper was causing plenty of concern for the home side.
Ipswich started the second half the stronger and it took four minutes for Barnsley to get out of their own half. Tamas Priskin was lucky to stay on the pitch after a late tackle on Foster after already being booked in the first half.
A controversial free kick was given to Ipswich that kept Barnsley under more pressure and eventually Ipswich won a corner. The lineman and referee were officiating in a strange way making a string of stupid decisions that merely served to infuriate the players and the fans. Barnsley were lucky to make it through the pressure mainly caused by those decisions.
With 55 minutes in Campbell-Ryce moved forward winning a corner kick for his efforts. There was plenty of head tennis in the box and eventually Ipswich were given a free kick.
A quick free kick across the pitch by Doyle to Macken who released Hume nearly created a goal scoring chance. Barnsley did get a corner and Hume curled the ball, nearly going straight into the net as the ball was cleared off the line by an Ipswich defender.
In the next minute Shotton's massive throw-in went straight to Macken and unmarked he should have scored from four yards, but somehow went just wide.
Barnsley then had a let off as Carlos Edwards strike was sliced wide of goal.
Trotter should have scored with 64 minutes on the clock as Barnsley looked to be losing control of the game. It signalled Mark Robins to make a double substitution to stop the rot. Colace made way for Hallfredsson and Campbell-Ryce's game was cut short for Jacob Butterfield.
Three consecutive corners for Ipswich Town could not yield a goal. Up the other side Iain Hume was rooted to the spot by Leadbitter holding onto him which gave the Reds a free kick from around 30 yards out. Hammill's strike was deflected for a corner. Hume put in a tricky ball with the wind assisting Barnsley and they got a second corner. Hammill lining up for a shot eventually got a third corner in a row and Hammill this time took it, hitting the ball straight out!
With 18 minutes left Counago was close to a goal, but as quick as that opportunity disappeared Iain Hume won a penalty in the Ipswich box. Iain Hume stepped hoping to get a third goal in two matches, but no the ball hit the post and the chance was gone. No Bogdanovic on the field when you need him.
The wind had caused the Barnsley goal to become littered with rubbish which was no doubt an annoyance for the Polish keeper.
Hallfredsson's quick movement forward and pass to Macken put Ipswich under pressure and Doyle's long range shot went well wide.
At the end of the 90 minutes Barnsley's under fire keeper pulled of an awesome save to keep Barnsley in the game as the fourth official showed five minuted added time.
A free kick for Barnsley 25 yards out nearly produced a goal when the ball fell for man of the match Shotton, but he missed the ball with one foot as it struck the other.
With virtully the last kick, Butterfield's deep free kick was only half cleared and Macken pounced right on the edge of the area to shoot past Wright into the bottom corner and claim all three points for the jubilant Reds.
