Barnsley Supporters FC 6-0 FC Buxton
Written by Allen Cooper on Monday 21st September 2009

BARNSLEY Supporters FC maintained their unbeaten start to the season as three goals in each half earned a comfortable win over Buxton at Honeywell Sports Centre.

Six different players made the scoresheet as a solid all round performance ensured a significant improvement on last season's 2-2 draw in Derbyshire.

The Reds, playing at home for the first time this season, gave a debut to goalkeeper Gary Wilson in the absence of Danny Haig, and Tom Pick made just his second appearance for the club.

The home side made an electric start to the game and were denied twice within seconds by Bucks' keeper Martin Turner. Phil McNulty's half volley from Lee Beard's left wing cross was turned away and Richard Brown's header from 10 yards was also well saved.

Beard was then played in by a wonderful pass down the inside left channel and it took a good save from Turner to deny the winger his first goal of the season.

It was still before the quarter hour mark when skipper Jon Harper went on a lung busting run before lobbing the ball over a Buxton defender and looping a volley just over the bar.

Harper then played McNulty in on goal with a classy slide-rule pass but his powerful shot went just over the angle of bar and post.

McNulty was soon in again and seemed certain score after rounding Turner but a defender managed to get back and clear the resulting shot away to safety.

The breakthrough finally came after 27 minutes. Beard's left wing centre caused pandemonium in the Buxton penalty area and after a series of desperate blocks Rob PICK finally fired home.

Chris Lee was next to threaten as he headed McNulty's corner just over. The hosts thought they had extended their advantage when Sam Owen raced onto Harper's precise pass and delivered the ball for McNulty to head home. Unfortunately the midfielder was deemed to have strayed offside and the goal was ruled out.

The second goal soon arrived however as after McNulty was once again denied, Rich BROWN's 20 yard shot was deflected past Turner.

The visitors' heads visibly dropped and they were caught out again within just a minute. Matt Goodwin delivered a superb ball in from the left hand side and OWEN had the simple task of tapping in at the far post.

HALF TIME: BARNSLEY SUPPORTERS FC 3-0 FC BUXTON

The early stages of the second half were a little scrappy, but Barnsley eventually found a fourth goal when BEARD hit an extraordinary lob from the left corner of the penalty area which left the stand-in keeper grasping at thin air.

Owen then put a wonderful ball through for Rob Pick to beat the keeper superbly but once again the flag was up much to the annoyance last season's leading scorer. Baz Goodwin was then denied a fine goal after some neat footwork on the edge of the penalty area.

The Reds had looked dangerous from set pieces all morning and were finally successful when MCNULTY deservedly got his goal from Matt Goodwin's flag kick.

Rob Pick surprised everyone including himself when he almost scored a header from yet another corner but it was blocked on the line by a Buxton defender.

Barnsley completed their victory with five minutes to go when Baz GOODWIN's 20 yard shot floated over the goalkeeper in not too dissimilar fashion to Beard's strike earlier on.

There was still time for brothers Tom and Rob Pick to curl over and head wide respectively before the curtain was finally brought down on another successful day for Barnsley.

Buxton boss Turner said: "Well done to Barnsley. We made it a decent game for a while but our heads dropped and their confidence grew as the game went on.

"Barnsley played some great pass and move football which we couldn't deal with. I can make excuses all day long but they were too good for us."

Barnsley's next fixture is on October 3rd when they host Ipswich Town at Honeywell Sports Centre once again.
