Barnsley Academy 1-2 Carlisle A below strength Barnsley Academy battled hard but suffered a defeat this afternoon's friendly encounter.
A much changed side from the team that beat Burnley 4-0 last week, it included three trialists and four under 16 players, with only a handful of the squad that won the Swedish tournament starting.
Carlisle looked the stronger side and had much of the possession, but the first shot on target came from Barnsley, although their keeper had the measure of it.
Carlisle continued to pressure and were rewarded with a goal on 30 minutes.
First half goalkeeper Tom Ruslin pulled off a couple of excellent saves to deny Carlisle getting any further ahead before the half time break.
The second half continued the same pattern of Carlisle pressing up the field and Barnsley counter-attacking. Apart from Reffin, the back line were all under 16s and they did well to repel the attacks.
Barnsley came close several times, but the ball just wouldn't fall for them until, with three minutes to go, one of the trialists hit a fantastic strike from 30 yards out that completely caught out the keeper and went into the top corner.
The Academy's league campaign begins in eleven days time when they face Portsmouth at home.
