Jamil Adam off to Dublin Barnsley's Jamil Adam has been picked for a three day training camp with the Republic of Ireland next week.
The 27 man squad will take part in the three day training camp in Dublin on May 18th prior to the UEFA Championship, elite qualifying phase where the Irish will face Sweden, Switzerland and tournament hosts, Belgium from the 5th - 10th June.
McCaffrey has drafted a number of previously uncapped players into the training squad including Ipswich goalkeeper, Ian McLoughlin, Millwall's Patrick O'Connor, Stockport County's Young Player of the Year, Matty Mainwaring and Jamil Adam who was crowned 2008 Academy Player of the Year for Barnsley.
Speaking ahead of the three day training camp, Irish manager, Sean McCaffrey said, "Of the 27 players selected, there are 18 who are eligible for next year's competition but at the moment we are not concerned about next year, they are there on merit and this camp is an ideal place to assess their fitness and form ahead of next month's qualifiers," said the Irish boss.
"Barnsley's attacker, Jamil Adams whose mother hails from Dublin has had a terrific season with Barnsley. Terry Conroy who is the FAI welfare officer in England identified Jamil's Irish roots while ex-Stockport County manager, Jim Gannon gave glowing reports on midfielder, Matty Mainwaring who has played a big part in the first team this year. FAI scout, Mark O'Toole also brought my attention to Milwall's reserve team captain, Patrick O'Connor who has also played a part in the first team this season. Also selected is Ipswich Town goalkeeper, Ian McLoughlin, formerly of St. Francis who was strongly recommended by St. Francis' Paul Duffy. This training camp is an ideal setting to evaluate all of these players at this level and I have no doubt that this will enable us to fully prepare for the UEFA Championship qualifiers in June," said McCaffrey.
The Irish get their competition underway on the 5th June against Belgium at the Complex Op de Keiberg in Tongeren before playing Switzerland at the same venue on the 7th June and they play their finals game against Sweden on 10th June at the Sport Centrum in Tessenderio.
The Republic of Ireland emerged successfully from the preliminary qualifying group of the 2009 UEFA Championship in Malta in November, 2008. France won the group and Ireland were second as Malta and Liechtenstein were eliminated.
