Barnsley Schoolboys v York Schools FA Under 12's Semi Final - Michael Dale Trophy Playing in front of a large crowd the young reds turned in a very impressive performance against league leaders York in the semi final of the Michael Dale trophy at Dorothy Hyman and won 4-1 meeting either Leeds, Warrington or Sheffield in the final.
Boosted by the return of key players they were quick off the mark and after 9 minutes Aaron Bettley held of his marker to turn and pass the ball for Fittam Kastrati to coolly slot the ball home to give the home side the early advantage. 1-0
This spurred both sides on and despite playing excellent football the young reds couldn't add to their tally before half time with both teams defending well although Hancock, Bell and Maddock went close with good efforts.
At the start of the second half the young reds maintained the pressure and went 2-0 up when Fittam Kastrati broke free to beat the advancing keeper after good work by Thomas Dolan.
This seemed to spur York on and Sellars in goal managed to push a shot around the post and Marsland Gray and captain Phyliss covered well to thwart the tide of attacks.
Philip Haynes replaced Bettley in attack and his fresh pair of legs caused the defenders problems when his direct running on to a throughball from Jack Shutt was well saved by brave keeping and stopped the reds from increasing their lead.
Joe Singleton caused problems with his long throw giving Kastrati his chance of a hat trick but the goal bound effort was tipped over the bar by the keeper for a corner. Singletons inswinging corner was headed on by Phyliss, partially cleared by the visitors and thumped home by Mason Bell from the corner of the box. 3-0.
Swift replaced Sellars in goal, Cooke replaced Maddock and Ward replaced Marsland Gray as the home team looked to protect there precious lead.
To their credit York continued to push forward and were rewarded with 10 minutes remaining when the home defence were caught square and a neat one two resulted in a goal 3-1
However the home team saved the best while last and young 'Kai-Aldo' - Kai Hancock moved quickly on half way to intercept the keepers long kick and his instinctive half volley returned the ball over the keeper into an empty net much to the delight of his team mates and the home crowd. The game
was a credit to schools football with all players contributing to a very exciting and entertaining tie. |
