Barnsley signed striker Kayode Odejayi from Cheltenham Town in June 2007 for a fee of £200,000.
Born in Ibadon, Nigeria, Kayode came up through the ranks at Bristol City, making six appearances for the Robins before leaving Ashton Gate in 2002. He spent a year with Forest Green and his impressive form led to a move to Cheltenham in 2003.
The 26-year-old made 148 appearances for Cheltenham, netting 30 goals, as the Robins established themselves in League One last season. He made 45 appearances during the 2006/2007 campaign, netting 13 goals.
Kayode endured a rollercoaster season with as many lows as highs. He started in the side but struggled in front of goal although his all around play often went unnoticed. Booed by a mindless minority at Oakwell, Kayode bounced back with an impressive cameo at Anfield before scoring a historic winner against Chelsea in the FA Cup Sixth Round at Oakwell.
The big striker's season hit another low point at Wembley as he missed a sitter that would have brought the Reds level but again he showed great courage and determination to hit the goal trail against Watford just days later. A memorable season was capped by an international call from Nigeria for their summer internationals. |
